Antibiotics affect migratory restlessness orientation

چکیده

The role of microbiome in shaping animal’s behavior is well established. Accordingly, the use antibiotics may have profound effects on behavior, which are seldom examined. Recently, symbiotic magnetic-sensing hypothesis has been forwarded as a mechanistic explanation for phenomenon animal magnetoreception. It suggests relationship between magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) and navigating host. To establish research protocol future behavioral studies, we examined effect widely used antibiotic substance migratory restlessness orientation bacteria. Using migrating Eurasian reed warblers, show that contrast to control group, treatment caused lack clear directionality an Emlen funnel experiment. group showed significant increase directional variance. This behaviors associated with magnetic sensing might be considered preliminary experimental support hypothesis. Further, lay could implemented experiments aiming prove or refute

Migratory Restlessness in an Equatorial Nonmigratory Bird

The urge of captive birds to migrate manifests itself in seasonally occurring restlessness, termed "Zugunruhe." Key insights into migration and an endogenous basis of behavior are based on Zugunruhe of migrants but have scarcely been tested in nonmigratory birds. We recorded Zugunruhe of African stonechats, small passerine birds that defend year-round territories and have diverged from northern...

Remnants of the Past or Ready to Move? Resident Birds Display Migratory Restlessness

The ability to respond to natural selection under novel conditions is critical for the establishment and persistence of introduced alien species and their ability to become invasive. Here we correlated neutral and quantitative genetic diversity of the weed Pennisetum setaceum Forsk. Chiov. (Poaceae) with differing global (North American and African) patterns of invasiveness and compared this di...

Size and accumulation of fuel reserves at stopover predict nocturnal restlessness in a migratory bird.

Early arrival at the breeding site positively affects the breeding success of migratory birds. During migration, birds spend most of their time at stopovers. Therefore, determining which factors shape stopover duration is essential to our understanding of avian migration. Because the main purpose of stopover is to accumulate fat as fuel for the next flight bout, fuel reserves at arrival and the...

Migratory restlessness in captive individuals predicts actual departure in the wild.

In captivity, migratory birds show increased activity during the time that they would normally migrate. The phenology and intensity of such 'migratory restlessness' has been shown to mirror species- and population-specific migration patterns observed in the wild and has consequently been used as a proxy for the motivation to migrate. Many studies doing so, however, were aiming to explain among-...

Plasma corticosterone increases during migratory restlessness in the captive white-crowned sparrow Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelli.

Plasma corticosterone increases during the period of spring migration in a variety of bird species. Long-distance migrants show elevations in corticosterone specifically in association with the stage of flight, suggesting that corticosterone may support flight-related processes, for example, locomotor activity and/or energy mobilization. The pattern of corticosterone secretion as it relates to ...
